Originally from Parma but relocated to Turin where Clodoveo Melegari actively worked during the second half of the nineteenth century. The Melegari liuteria is with no surprises, it is easily reknown and may be distinguished in two ways: the final production is signed by both brothers or just by Enrico. The varnish of the first violins signed by the Melegari brothers is of an amber color, at times dark brown, and of a thin and fragile paste. They are instruments that present a bit of constructive ingenuousness. The instruments attributed to just Enrico present a more coherent work. The varnish utilized by Enrico is of a rather thicker and redder oil. Other than his signiture he labelled the internal and external parts of his instruments.
