This instrument derived from the medieval monochord and originally had only a single string. Later, other strings were added for a total of four strings plus an imprecise number of strings inside the sound box that vibrated sympathetically. Antonio Vivaldi wrote two concertos with violins in tromba marina: RV221 and RV588. The use of the tromba marina for tonal colour was called for in Serse by Jean Baptiste Lully. In some cases, this instrument can reach a height of two meters.
