Giovanni Cavani, Spilamberto (Modena) 1851-1936
This maestro manufactured an important number of musical instruments but with a preference for the Guarnieri of Jesus model. Throughout his manufactures there are "viole da gamba" and "viole d'amore". He always stamped the internal and external parts of his instruments with G.C.
The violin illustrated here is of a great craftmanship, covered by an undeniably high regarded oil varnish that attributes a pleasant and potent acoustic.

The Guarnery family and 20th-century Italian copies" by Artemio Versari
Giovanni Cavani was born at Spilamberto in the province of Modena on August 13th 1851. He was probably taught by his father, Domenico; he had a great love of violin making, producing a considerable number of violins, violas, cellos and also a few double basses. His artistic talent quickly gave him quite a reputation. Died in the town of his birth on June 21th 1936.
His instruments are not especially refined, but to compensate for this they embody remarkable personality, being the fruit of Cavani’s concentration on their acoustic qualities.
For most of his career Giovanni Cavani dedicated himself to making copies of the classics, with positive results.
He particularly liked to copy Stradivari, Gagliano and Guarneri, for which he used very old wood.
